Amy Lane is just about perfect. Her "Talker" books, and the three gems that make up the "Promise Rock" series to date are so thoughtfully written and the characters so skillfully wrought that I cannot imagine them being any better.

The basic premise is something we come to expect with Ms. Lane; a flawed man meets another flawed man and falls in love. In this case the flawed man is Jeff, the PT who befriends Crick in book one, and plays a role with Shane and Mikhail in book two. His "boy meets boy" other half is Collin, a new character in the series who Jeff meets early on, but who comes back several years later to capture his heart. Storytelling 101, but how the journey begins and the road to get to love, that is where this writer soars.

Jeff has been an intriguing character in the background of the two previous installments, but he gets to be full out front stage diva in this work. And man, does he shine. His story, how he became HIV positive (not hidden in the past books), and how he became Uncle Jeffy to this family just reverberates. Then, Collin comes into his life, not once, but twice. Taking on a love story between two men who are HIV positive is new ground, and Holy Jesus, does Ms. Lane set the bar high. At the end, I cannot decide who I love most in these books, Deacon and Crick, Shane and Mickey or Jeff and Collin. Deacon rightfully is the stunner, and who would not fall in love with him. But these two guys, I choke up just thinking about their story. Nothing rocket science here, just honest characters with whom I fell in love.

The key to Ms. Lane's writing, to me, is the gentleness with which she creates these characters. Like the first reviewer, I have to agree, these are PEOPLE. I know these folks in my real life, even though the names are different. The backstories are built with such care and love, and pains, tragedies and ultimately, joys that they experience just ring so true. These are men (and women) that we know and care about, and I cannot remember having to put any book down so much to wipe away tears (of pain, heartbreak, joy and laughter)as I have with her characters.

I ramble, I know, but honest to God, if you don't read anything else this year, read this book. This story will break your heart then heal it with so much love and grace. No spoiler, but the scene right at the end, at Promise Rock, when Mikhail speaks and Collin reacts, THAT, my friends is emotion so real, I lost it one last time right there.
These books, to me, stand up against piece of literature I can name, including the masters.

Amy Lane, love you lady. Your friend Bonnie isn't the only one who had your back about your writing. It is an honor to read your works.

Living Promises Amy Lane 9781613720462 Books Reviews

Why did I not really like this story? There was too much page space given to Jeff's issues with his past and unresolved issues with family. It did not make sense to have it in there because that story-line did not really go anywhere. The part with Kevin and his decision at war was too sad for words but at the same time completely overshadowed Collin's role in this book. In explaining so much about Jeff he turned into more than just a diva and a caricature of himself, he seemed not to really know Collin and in many ways pushing Collin away seemed to easy for him.
Why I liked this book? I like Amy Lane's voice, her humour, her intensity and attention to detail. I like that she stayed true to the characters in the book, even though it seemed less about romance and more about family matters. I would recommend this book to others who got invested in these characters and as a feelgood story.
I went through every horrible emotion with the first story, and the second story as well. However at 31% into the 3rd story I became aware of what was coming up. So I came here to read the reviews and I'm glad I did. I only finished the 2nd book this morning and went right to the 3rd. I can't finish it, at least not now. Amy is a good writer. She pulls her reader's in and makes them not only think, but FEEL. Sometimes feeling can be a little too much when you are trying to read a love story, and these stories are full of love, hurt, betrayal adoration, peace, horror and on and on. I sobbed too much yesterday to put myself through it again when I know what's coming. Maybe I'll come back to it after my feelings aren't so raw. You may say, it's only a friggin' fiction book. But that is wherein lies Amy's talent. She can rip your heart through pages.

OK, I changed my star status to 5 stars. I finished the 3rd book and have to admit I am hooked, totally and completely. This author has a talent and should be recognized for the work that she does, and that means bringing it all to the table. Read them, enjoy them, weep with them, but remember in the end, it is all a happily ever after. )
I might have used most of a box of Puffs while reading this one, and I might have laughed out loud many times, too. As a writer (not yet published) I am in awe of Lane's talent. As a reader, I am in love with all these characters! There is so much heart in each book. I see her research but it's not overt. Rather, she's blended it into the entangled affections, challenges and baggage and bedrock loyalty of the characters.

I can't recommend this series enough. I'm really glad I already own Promises #4!
I have just re-read the three books of the Promise Rock trilogy. Of the three this is probably the weakest. Not content with the two main characters having their own set of problems the secondary characters (Deacon and Crick) were saddled with more life threatening situations...in the end it was all a bit two much..and whats with the males blushing all the time...I have never known males to blush so much...Deacon maybe because he is shy and Shane because he considers himself awkward and clumsy....but the others just didn't seem like the type of characters that would be given to that sort of thing with such monotonous regularity. Also in Book one we established that Deacon was "a God" but to hear all the characters sprout the same sentiments constantly through all three books was a bit over the top...surely some of them just considered him a great guy....
On the whole book one is great..book two is pretty good.. the quality of the story starts to slide a bit and by book three its starts to get repetitive. Maybe Amy lane should have known when to stop.By by the end of the third book I was getting impatient with some of the characters and the overload of angst.
