The Nostluhk are feared throughout the galaxy. A thousand years ago they ruled the galaxy in an empire built on terror and slaughter. Now they exist as shells, decrepit rotting corpses, barely alive and yet still clinging on to the small patchwork of stars they have held on to. They have no morals, advanced technology, are unbeaten in living memory, and they never, ever, negotiate. They are beings of ancient fear, nightmares made manifest. And now they have kidnapped a starship full of Alliance citizens. From the bridge of her first command Captain Ejjina Mexonber-Quad watches helpless, ordered not to get involved as people are tortured to death. In the end, she has a choice to make, to throw away her career on a suicide mission not everyone will return from, or watch on as hundreds of innocent people die. But when the psychotic Nostluhk kidnap over five hundred people and begin experimenting on them Ejjian is faced with a choice, throw away her career on a suicide mission to save them, or violate every tenant of her conscience and faith.

This book is part of a series called "The Seraphic Chronicles" and has a lot going for it. It's a little formulaic but you can count on the heroine coming out ahead of the game. In short, it's fun, the plot keeps boiling along, and the ideas behind the story are good. Of course, as has often been the case in space-opera types of science fiction, aliens are portrayed as largely human with some modifications.

Where I ran into problems with this, and the other books in the series, is that it appears there has been no proof-reading at all. The grammar seems to follow its own rules. Commas show up everywhere but rarely where they should be located. Plural and possessive cases are usually reversed (example from the fourth book, Oblivion: ...they could easily see the starfighters heading their way and pick them off at a far greater distance than the weapons Ejjina's starfighter's could use." In this case there is no apostrophe needed in "starfighters's" because it is a PLURAL not POSSESSIVE case.

Too many times "to, too, and two" are used wrong - I've often seen "to" meant to be "too" to be used for "also." Quotes have been used incorrectly continuously through the series. I could go on but honestly gave up tracking the errors and spent my time trying to understand what Atkinson was actually trying to say. In places this was a challenge because many times words were used that had nothing to do with the sentence in which they were used. Also the word "but" was used in too many places, to link thoughts in the narrative, when ending the sentence and starting another would have made the meaning clearer.

So if you like a good story but are indifferent to spelling, grammar, and other things that make writing comprehensible, this book is for you. I've kept reading the series despite these issues because it was good storytelling.

Very good read. enjoyed it very much. needs spell check and proo freading.
Good series, good reads.
I really enjoyed the story but there are so many extra words & errors in sentences. Trying to figure out what the sentence was meant to say took away from the story. One more read through would have cleared up a lot of the mistakes.
While I enjoyed the characters and action, for the most part...
The utter and complete lack of even an attempt to edit and proof these works has destroyed the series for me. The author obviously knows the correct usages and demonstrates them, but then proceeds to confuse Trial/Trail, Border/Boarder, To/Too/Two, She/He/Her and so many more that are used interchangeably. Time and again they show a complete disregard for any known rules of grammar.

As much as I was willing to put up with in the earlier works, by the third book I would expect improvements. Instead it is just more of the same errors.
Now instead of willing to support a new and upcoming author, I find myself just too pissed off to continue any further. Maybe I will one day return and try Mr. Atkinson's works again, but I find it impossible to care for works he seems not to care to finish.
