After the EMP brought America to it’s knees, Jack Miller and his family barely escaped Baltimore with their lives. Wyatt and the Millers made the trip to his West Virginia homestead, but without supplies they are unprepared to face the difficult winter. Jack is forced to go far from his home in search of food. He stumbles on a cache of food large enough to feed his family for months but encounters another group who claims the resource for their own, setting in motion a conflict that will spiral of control.

Book One was interesting. However, this book had too many improbably actions and twists, and I got tired of reading it about half way thru, but decided to brave it out. It read almost like an old "penny dreadful," simplistic and for high school students.There were lots of examples of incorrect terms (For ex., "leads" instead of "reins" on the horse, but then changing back to reins later on in the book. ?? "Between the biker gang." ?? How about "among the gang members?" Use of the word "home," instead of "house," for an empty, abandoned house. A home is where people live. A house is where nobody lives, among other definitions. The hero should have been beaten to death by the bad guy, but somehow springs back to strong action. The hero (?) Jack spends a lot of time, perhaps too much, commiserating and agonizing over the fact that he killed a young man in self defense. Jack still makes many stupid mistakes as in Book One. Author's lack of experience in combat and CQB is telling, as is his poor to fair use of the English language. In all, the book turned from the post apocalyptic genre into just another story of a feud between two towns and men. No PA instructional material here. Author should put the manuscript out to people for editing who really know things.
I rate the writing a three out of five, which does not mean I really liked it. Author's style needs more work.

Very good but left hanging. Not even sure if there's another coming. And I don't like having to wait a long time for one.....you forget what it was about.
Jack's concern for an ill son and a town's survival are on the line. Several sub plots that keep the reader engaged in the story line. An excellent sequel!
An enjoyable and thought provoking read that had some interesting sub-plots. My interest was kept with the moral and ethical dilemmas faced by some of the characters. Whilst many people will continue to see the goodness in most people this book clearly depicts how far some people will go to defend themselves or avenge their family members. I look forward to more interesting reads form John Winchester.
It was interesting to see how the man who thought he was a prepper quickly learned that reading about and stocking up on food and supplies was not enough if your not in shape .
Or don't know how to do some of the things you read about .
Nice plot. Moved well. Likeable characters. I would buy a sequel or read more from the author. Solid five star.
Over all I liked the book. The authors writing style is good, and enjoyable. Most of the time I like his characters, but I had a real problem getting through what felt like artificial weaknesses writen into the characters to support the story this time around. I have a hard time believing Jack would have struggled with the moral dilemmas he faced, in light of the times and situations he found himself in.

In Desperate Measures, .. we follow the Miller family as Jack, his wife Amy, and their sons Kenny and Danny who trying to survive, in their turned up-side down world that resulted from an EMP strike just over a year ago. But things only become worse when one of the son's becomes ill, and Jack now needs to do what he must, to insure his son gets better, and to place food on their table. But in times of need, sometimes greed becomes the winner, and along with greed, simple life situations can mean the difference between living and dying, and the consequences of those choices.
Where as this book is good.. the author decided to change things up a little differently from his first book The Journey Home, and has the story being told as 2 small towns, that comes to terms when a food source is found that they both are willing to kill for.
I really liked this book .. though I found The Journey Home more enjoyable to read. I think the reason for this, is because there is a little more violence in this book than in the previous one. There is enough hatred and killing in my real world, and I do not care for it to also be over-kill in the books that I read too.
So go get your copies of this good series.. and now on to reading another good book from this author.. Retribution !!
