Lost December A Novel Richard Paul Evans Books Reviews
Lost December is an incredible, in-depth, first person account of a modern prodigal. The Bible clearly depicts the strong emotion of the father for his returning son. Likewise, Evan's so emotionally depicts the same joy in Carl Crisp when his son finally returns to him in Lost December. While the Bible does not say much about prodigal's feelings as he is received back into his father's home, Evan's main character, Luke Crisp, reveals an over-whelming humility and true repentance for all the pain he has caused others, particularly his beloved father. The biblical account of the love of the father always moves me to tears and Lost December's finale was no exception. I highly recommend Lost December to all. Parents, this would make a great graduation gift. There are so many lessons taught that may cause your son or daughter to stop to think before giving in to peer pressure or throwing out parental guidance in one moment of weakness. I enjoyed the many quotable passages throughout this book, particularly in the small excerpts in Luke Crisp's Diary at the beginning of each chapter. " I have learned that if you have something to eat, a roof overhead and clean water, you should be most grateful---you number among the world's most blessed." Rare and gifted storyteller, Richard Paul Evans, will not disappoint in his latest tale, Lost December.
Richard Paul Evans continues to delight readers with his latest inspiration called "Lost December". This book beginning with the original parable of "The Prodigal Son" takes the reader on an adventure in a modern retelling of the story.
On this journey we meet Luke Crisp. Young, intelligent and next in line to take over the Crisp Corporation from his father. Carl Crisp is a loving father who raised Luke after his wife passed away. Teaching him to have a strong work ethic and showing him how to treat people with respect and dignity.
When Luke goes to Wharton to get his MBA to prepare him for what his father hopes is his future with the company, he meets 5 people who challenge his thinking and his heart. When there is an unfortunate accident involving one of them, the rest decide to go on an extended vacation to Europe in an effort to enjoy the spoils of life while they can
Luke knowing he has a trust fund at his disposal decides to join them and his Father is saddened to see his son go instead of taking over the business. There is a part of Luke that knows he has hurt his Father, but the lure of excitement entices him more.
What follows is a series of greedy, self- serving events that turn into a life- altering spin steering Luke's path out of control. With all of his friends gone, he is left to try to pick up the pieces. Thanks to a couple of angels that God puts in his way, Luke is able to climb out of his despair and ultimately finds his way home to Love and Forgiveness.
This book like all of Richard Paul Evans books is filled with inspiration and many points to ponder. I really enjoyed this book. Richard Paul Evans does not disappoint. A truly enjoyable read!
This was not my favorite RPE book for several reasons, the biggest reason being that its given upfront that the book is a modern rendition of The Prodigal Son. In my opinion, it would have been better to let the reader come to that conclusion for him or her self, and perhaps added it in to the epilogue. I also didn't like how spineless Luke seemed to be, even though his upbringing and experiences should've dictated that he be more careful with his money. Do not even get me started with the trust fund snafu, a Wharton MBA grad should know better than to make that kind of mistake.
Additionally, the character development just wasn't there for me. Luke's "friends" seemed to have no rhyme or reason for the most part, and Luke, although considerably close to his dad in the beginning, willingly accepts that his father hates him but a comment made from whatshisface (Henry, maybe?). The emotional aspects that I come to expect from RPE just weren't there, and the love story within the book was mediocre at best.
Luckily, I am not a first time RPE reader, so this book couldn't turn me away from his other works, but I'd be worried for a first time reader reading this book, because I don't feel like it gives an accurate representation of the work RPE is capable of.
